ACT Law Society welcomes new Supreme Court Judge

The ACT Law Society has welcomed today's appointment of Chrissa Loukas-Karlsson SC as a new Judge of the ACT Supreme Court.

Chrissa Loukas-Karlsson was called to the Bar in 1989 and was appointed Senior Counsel in October 2012. Her career has included three years as Counsel before the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and she has appeared in a wide range of criminal trials, sentence matters and appeals across local courts and the High Court of Australia. She has served as a Public Defender since July 1995, and has served as an Acting District Court Judge (1996-97) and a Judicial Member (1997-2003). She has been a Director of the Law Council of Australia since 2015, and was elected Junior Vice-President of the New South Wales Bar Association last year.

In 2017 she was awarded the Barrister of the Year Award by the Women Lawyers Association of NSW.

She fills the vacancy created by the imminent retirement of Justice Hilary Penfold. Her appointment will start on 26 March 2018.

"The Law Society would like to congratulate Ms Loukas-Karlsson SC on her appointment," said Law Society President, Sarah Avery. "I have worked with Ms Loukas-Karlsson on the Board of Directors of the Law Council of Australia, and I offer her my warm regards and sincere congratulations. Her deep understanding of social justice, and her work with Legal Aid and the Aboriginal Legal Service, will bring valuable experience and perspective to the bench. The Society and its members look forward to working with her in the future."

"While delighted with this outstanding appointment, the ACT Law Society reiterates that it hopes to see ACT practitioners, particularly solicitors, join her on the bench in future appointments.”
