ACT Law Society welcomes inspiring ‘first’ for High Court

The ACT Law Society today applauded the appointment of Justice Susan Kiefel AC as the next Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. She will be the first woman to hold the position.

Sarah Avery, the youngest President of the ACT Law Society, said: “Justice Kiefel’s promotion to Australia’s highest judicial office is an inspiration for all women in the legal profession. Her determination, hard work, and commitment to the law make her an exceptional role model for all young people considering a career in law.

“Justice Kiefel once described herself as a ‘lonely tree’ in a sea of men, a feeling many women in the profession would be familiar with. Although that gender imbalance is improving, women remain underrepresented in high-level roles throughout the profession.

“It is wonderful to see the appointment of such a well-qualified and distinguished person as Chief Justice.

“The Law Society warmly congratulates Justice Kiefel on her historic appointment.”
