2022 Intensive: The ACT restorative justice scheme

The 2022 CPD Intensive Series: The ACT restorative justice scheme

Restorative Justice Conferencing provides those harmed by an incident or pattern of behaviour with an opportunity to be heard and acknowledged, to hold the person responsible accountable for their actions, to have some steps taken to repair the harm caused, and to do so in a safe environment supported by family and friends. For someone who has caused harm, it is an opportunity to take responsibility for their actions in a non-stigmatising environment supported by family or friends, to understand the consequences of their actions, and to be actively involved in addressing the harm that has resulted. Restorative justice convenors assist the parties to prepare for and participate in a dialogue which is safe and productive.

The ACT is unique in Australia for having a comprehensive Restorative Justice Scheme which facilitates access to restorative justice conferencing for victims of crime in both youth and adult criminal matters, and at any stage of the criminal justice system.

In this session, representatives from the Restorative Justice Unit, which administers the Scheme, will describe the work of the Unit with the assistance of case studies. They’ll also explain the mechanics of the scheme, including referral stages, eligibility criteria, how matters are assessed for suitability, and how the Scheme interacts with the formal criminal justice system. Time will be allocated for questions and answers at the end of the presentation.
