Join The Hon. Justice Perry and The Hon. Justice Goodman of the Federal Court of Australia for an engaging and thought-provoking CPD seminar.
This seminar will examine two important aspects of litigation practice.
The first element will explore the legal and ethical obligations of government, government-funded institutions and other litigants in the conduct of litigation. It will consider the application of model litigant principles, whether comparable standards should extend to organisations substantially funded by government, and the consequences of failing to meet these obligations, including indemnity costs orders, aggravated damages and personal costs orders against legal practitioners.
The second session will focus on persuasive written advocacy. Delivered in an interactive Q&A format, it will provide practical guidance on the principles of effective written advocacy, including how to present clear, concise and persuasive submissions that assist the Court and advance a client's case.
This seminar is suitable for solicitors and barristers seeking to strengthen both their understanding of professional obligations in litigation and their written advocacy skills.
This is a free CPD event for all ACT Bar and ACT Law Society Members. Tea, coffee and light afternoon refreshments will be provided.

MEET THE SPEAKERS
THE HON. JUSTICE PERRY

The Honourable Justice Perry was appointed to the Federal Court of Australia in 2013 and has since held a number of significant judicial and tribunal appointments, including as a Deputy President of the Administrative Review Tribunal and the Vice President of the Defence Force Discipline Appeal Tribunal. A serving Air Commodore in the Royal Australian Air Force Legal Specialist Reserves, Her Honour is also Deputy Judge Advocate General, Air Force. The Hon. Justice Perry holds a first class honours degree in law from the University of Adelaide and a PhD in international law from the University of Cambridge, and is widely recognised for contributions to administrative, constitutional and public law, judicial diversity, legal education, and professional mentoring.
THE HON. JUSTICE GOODMAN
FEDERAL COURT OF AUSTRALIA
The Honourable Justice Goodman was appointed to the Federal Court on 11 November 2021. His Honour graduated from the Australian National University with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and a Bachelor of Science in 1989 and with a Master of Laws from the University of Sydney in 1994. The Honourable Justice Goodman began his legal career in 1989 as a solicitor with Clayton Utz and was a partner of that firm specialising in corporations law litigation, taxation litigation and general commercial litigation, prior to being called to the Bar in 2001. His Honour was appointed Senior Counsel in 2016 specialising in commercial disputes, with particular experience in commercial law and equity, corporations law, trade practices and insurance law.

General
ACT Law Society invoices have payment terms of 14 days. Fees are payable upon registration. A 1.2% surcharge may be incurred on payments processed via credit/debit card. The Society reserves the right to cancel or alter events at its discretion, and in such circumstances, attendees will be notified via email.
Definitions — 'Registration' means any booking given to the Society in writing, on our website, or by phone. 'Member' means any member of the ACT Law Society, including associate members and honorary members. 'New Lawyer' means any member who has held a practising certificate for five years or less. 'CLC' means any member working for a recognised community legal centre, or holding a volunteer practising certificate. 'Student' means any member holding a student membership.

Cancellation policy
All cancellations must be made in writing, and all cancellations will incur a fee, however, no charge will be incurred for substituting another person. Outside of the cancellation periods given below, a $10 administration fee will be incurred for any cancellation made. If a registered attendee fails to attend without notifying the Society in writing, no credit or refund will be offered and 100% of the total cost will be retained by the Society.
CPD Events — In the case of CPD events held at an venue other than the Law Society, no refund can be made after the RSVP date of the event. In the case of CPD events held at the Law Society, for cancellations made up to two working days prior to the event, 50% of the total cost will be retained by the Society as a cancellation fee and the balance may be used as a credit towards other CPD events or be refunded. If you choose to keep a credit it will remain valid for 12 months from the event date, after which time it will expire. For cancellations within two working days of the event, no refunds or credits will be applicable.
Webinars — In the case of live or on-demand webinars, as connection details are sent when registration is completed, no refund or cancellation is available.
Social events — In the case of social events, no refund can be made after the RSVP date of the event.
