Appointment of New Chief Magistrate and Supreme Court Judge

The ACT Law Society congratulates Justice Louise Taylor on her appointment as the Chief Magistrate of the ACT Magistrates Court and Acting Justice Andrew Muller SC as a Resident Judge of the ACT Supreme Court.

ACT Attorney-General Tara Cheyne MLA has announced the appointment of Justice Taylor and Acting Justice Muller SC today, stating that the appointments reflected the depth and strength of the ACT legal profession and the standing both had earned through their careers.

Justice Taylor was appointed as a Magistrate in 2018 and as a Resident Judge of the ACT Supreme Court in 2023, having demonstrated exceptional capability across both jurisdictions throughout her judicial career. Justice Taylor was the first Aboriginal woman in Australia to be appointed to a superior court. Justice Taylor will assume the role of Chief Magistrate in May 2026, while continuing to hold her commission as a Resident Judge of the ACT Supreme Court.

Acting Justice Muller SC has served as an Acting Judge of the ACT Supreme Court since April 2025.
