The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Justice Committee was established in September 2020 to provide a voice to these important issues both within and beyond the ACT legal profession. The committee is chaired by Wiradjuri woman, Emma Towney (a solicitor with the Dhurrawang Aboriginal Human Rights Program at Canberra Community Law) and consists of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal legal professionals coming together to monitor and advocate on legal issues that impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in the ACT and region.
The current focus of the committee includes producing Best Practice Guidelines for lawyers working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients in the ACT, and pursuing legal reform work such as raising the age of criminal responsibility and the ongoing review of child protection decisions in the ACT.
You can contact the committee directly through the Law Society's Committee Administrator, Tanya Holt, on firstname.lastname@example.org.
