Events ACT Law Week

ACT Law Week

Law Week is a national annual event that aims to promote greater understanding within the community of the law, the legal system and the legal profession. National Law Week will be held in 2012 from the 14th to the 20th of May. Law Week is also a chance for lawyers to let their hair down a bit.  Law Week traditional favourites are the famous Quiz Night and the mixed Soccer Competition.

Some key events during Law Week include:

  • Law Week Launch - Law Week in the ACT is launched with a breakfast and a Great Debate. Speakers are chosen from various arenas within the ACT, such as journalists, young lawyers and politicians.
  • Sir Richard Blackburn Lecture  - the Blackburn Lecture has been a traditional Law Week event, held annually for 23 years. The lecture has featured luminaries from the judiciary, academia and the ranks of the legal profession itself.
  • Women Lawyers' Dinner - organised by the ACT Women Lawyers' Association.
  • Young Lawyers' Committee Quiz Night  - The Young Lawyers' Committee Quiz Night has been one of the highlights of Law Week for many years.
  • Mixed six-a-side Law Week Soccer Competition - Games are played on the four Fridays leading up to Law Week, with the finals being played on the Friday during Law Week.
  • Supreme Court Tours - The Supreme Court arranges Court tours during Law Week. The tours comprise of a 15-20 minute guided tour and a Live Court sitting.

In the Australian Capital Territory, Law Week raises money for a local charity.
